Take a stroll through el Valle de Ricote

Ojós
When the river narrows, Ojós is born.
Intimate, fertile and full of nuances, it’s a small oasis where water, lemon trees and water wheels provide a close, almost secretive landscape. Its streets invite you to wander slowly, aimlessly, letting yourself be carried along.

Ojós is closeness.
A whisper in the middle of the valley.
But it is also living history. A village defined by water and centuries of coexistence between the cultures that left their mark in its irrigation channels, its trails and the way of living with the landscape. Since the times of al-Ándalus, the groves of fruit trees have given meaning to life here, shaping a fertile territory embraced by mountains and ravines.
Among palm trees, fruit trees and steep slopes, Ojós preserves the most authentic essence of the Valle de Ricote. A place where you can still hear the river, see birds flying over the rocky cliffs or watch the light change over the mountains as evening falls.
Its viewpoints reveal some of the most stunning landscapes in the valley. From the Barranco de Ricote to the Salto de la Novia and the Sierra del Cajal, nature shows itself here as both wild and delicate: riverbeds, traditional fruit orchards, historic paths and protected areas that form part of the Natura 2000 network.
Another way to get to know Ojós is through its gastronomy, which is deeply rooted in the local produce and in recipes handed down from generation to generation. Here, traditional dishes such as rice with rabbit and snails, wheat stew, “migas ruleras” and “paparajotes” are still prepared, all using the simple ingredients and distinctive flavours of the Valle de Ricote. Among its most iconic sweet desserts are the famous bizcochos borrachos, small homemade cakes soaked in alcoholic spirits, which are rooted in the local baking tradition.
Small in size but huge in character, the town retains that unhurried pace that makes any visit a serene and deeply human experience.
Here, there is no need to rush.
Simply look, breathe… and let the valley speak for itself.
