Cultural Route through el Valle de Ricote
An invitiation to discover the history, Heritage and the cultural identity of the Valle de Ricote Slow experience.
The "Date una huerta” walk in the Valle de Ricote connects Ulea, Villanueva del Río Segura, Ojós and Ricote along a route which reveals some of the most representative Heritage and cultural sites in the area.
The main thread of the proposed route consists of four interpretation centres which help you to understand the historical development of the valley and its close relationship with water, the farmland and the legacy of al-Ándalus. In addition, it includes monumental churches, historic buildings, venues related to the culture of water and landscapes which reflect the memories of centuries of harmony between nature and human activity.
In Ulea, the Salto de la Novia interpretation centre, the church of San Bartolomé and the unusual Casa Eiffel illustrate some of the most important heritage of the municipality.
In Villanueva del Río Segura, the Museo Palacete Doña Isabel Baltasara, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the small church of San Roque show the historical and cultural importance of a place so closely intertwined with the fruit orchards and, in particular, citrus growing.
Ojós invites you to learn about the culture of water at the Ecomuseo, housed in the old bath-house, the Museo de Belenes del Mundo (Museum of Nativity Scenes from Around the World) and the annual countryside alongside the River Segura, all of them fundamental to an understanding of the identity of the valley.
The route ends in Ricote, where the Centro de Interpretación Al-Ricotí, the church of San Sebastián, the castle of Alarbona, the Palacio de los Llamas and the Casa de la Encomienda illustrate the last Moorish enclave in the Levante area of Spain.
Rather than a sightseeing tour of monuments, this route offers a way to understand the Valle de Ricote Slow experience through its countryside, its traditions and the places which have historical significance for the people who live here.
A trip which delves into the memory of a land where water, agriculture and culture are still part of daily life.
