Valle de Ricote Water Route

Irrigation channels, weirs, cisterns and waterwheels that continue to shape the rhythm of the landscape.

Irrigation channels, weirs, cisterns and water wheels that continue to set the pace of the area. The Water Route offers a tour of irrigation channels, weirs, water wheels, wash houses, mills and ancient hydraulic systems that continue to set the tempo of the valley. A route where the constant sound of water accompanies you with every step and where visitors discover how the River Segura transformed this corner of the Región de Murcia into a veritable inland oasis.

In towns like Ojós, Ulea, Ricote and Villanueva del Río Segura, the route offers insights into the extraordinary hydraulic heritage inherited from the world of Al-Ándalus and perfected over generations. Historic irrigation channels, watercourses, reservoirs and gravity-fed irrigation systems continue to supply the traditional fruit groves and shape one of the most unique cultural landscapes in the southeast of Spain.

The route passes through such iconic sites as the Azud de Ojós weir, traditional water wheels, old flour mills and the irrigation channels which wind their way through lemon groves, palm trees and narrow country lanes. These features are not only part of the historical heritage but also an integral part of daily life in the valley.

In places such as the Estrecho del Solvente and the Paraje del Golgo, the water and the mountains create landscapes of immense natural beauty, where visitors can walk alongside the river and discover the intimate relationship between nature and the land.

The Water Route is also a way of understanding the Valle de Ricote from its very origins.

Because here, everything begins and ends with water.

Without it, there would be no fruit trees, no villages, no paths, nor the unhurried way of life that still defines this place.

To follow this route is to hear how the heart of the valley continues to beat to the rhythm of the river.
