Manor Houses Route through El Valle de Ricote

The footprints of another time

Amid quiet streets and peaceful squares, the Valle de Ricote retains the traces of a bygone era.

An era of manor houses, stately balconies and buildings that still bear witness to the social and cultural history of the region.

The Manor House Route takes in some of the most iconic properties in the valley’s municipalities, demonstrating how traditional architecture and old family residences form an essential part of the cultural landscape.

In Ulea, Ricote, Ojós and Villanueva del Río Segura, there are buildings linked to historic families, former landowners and prominent figures in local life. Houses which were built in close connection with the fruit groves, the water and the traditional economy of the valley.

In Ulea, the highlight is the well-known Casa del Cura or ‘Casa Eiffel’, a unique modernist building which has become one of the town’s architectural icons. Nearby, there are also old stately homes linked to the town’s agricultural and social history.

In Ricote, sites such as the Palacio Llamas residence and the old Casa de la Encomienda are a reminder of the historical significance this town held for centuries, particularly following the arrival of the Order of Santiago. Their façades, courtyards and architectural features still preserve part of that history.

Villanueva del Río Segura is home to historic buildings such as the Casa de Doña Isabel, linked to the growth and transformation of the town alongside the River Segura and the traditional fruit orchards.

Beyond their architectural value, these houses help to understand how life was organized in the valley and how the agricultural landscape influenced the way people built, lived and interacted with the land.

Balconies, inner courtyards, wrought-iron railings, coats of arms and traditional façades form part of a discreet yet deeply authentic heritage, naturally integrated into the daily life of the villages.

To follow this route is to discover that the history of the Valle de Ricote is also written in its open windows, in its whitewashed walls… and in the houses that still watch the passing of time.
